“If we find combinations, then we make evolution."
Artist Koen Vanmechelen
Cosmopolitan Chicken Project
Like humans, chickens are descended from a single species. The common ancestor of the world’s chickens, the Red Junglefowl, still lives at the foot of the Himalaya.
In a symbionic relation with humans, it spread itself all over the planet, diversifying into hundreds of iconic cultural defined species, each uniquely adapted to their local environments and reflecting the cultural characteristics of their regions and communities.
The Cosmopolitan Chicken Project began as his attempt to disrupt that process and open up new evolutionary pathways to allow complexity back in. It has become a never-ending exploration of the impact of cultural and biological diversity on society as a whole.
